Article: GMO Ban in Los Angeles Losing Support, Regulation Might be Dead
Summary
In Los Angeles, there is a pending GMO ban. However, the ban will be largely symbolic since there are no known GMO crops being raised in Los Angeles.
During the initial stage of approval, only one out of the five council members opposed the ban. However, three days before they were about to officially vote, there was a massive lobbying effort.
During their last discussion, three out of the five voters opposed the ban. All three deny that their change of heart was because of the lobbyists, however nothing else has changed since then. There is now doubt to whether the bill will actually pass.
There are also many other ongoing legal efforts relating to GMOs. Last year, a GMO labeling ban bill was introduced to Congress. This would make the government in control of overseeing GMOs and would ban states to require GMO labeling.

During the unit on Molecular Genetics, we had a debate on the GMO controversy. If this ban in Los Angeles passes, other cities might follow their lead. If it does not pass, pro-GMO lobbyists can use this to further prove their argument.

Do you think/know that because LA is such a big city and major outlet for media that if they lift the GMO ban, it will have a major effect on other cities' outlooks on GMOs?
ReplyDeleteThe ban was recently discarded and therefore was never implemented in LA.
DeleteDo you think that if the GMO ban gets passed in LA, it will spread to the rest of the country since the production of GMOs is such a large industry?
ReplyDeleteSince there are currently no GMO foods being grown in LA, the rest of the country would not be affected by this ban. However, the ban could fuel other non-GMO lobbyists to try to implement a similar ban in their city.
